Honda to leave F1 Empty Honda to leave F1

    Post by dr-baker Fri Oct 02, 2020 9:57 am

Honda is to leave F1 at the end of 2021, citing costs as the main factor, along with Red Bull not fighting for the championship.

At a time when FE is attracting a number of manufacturers, it is a shame that F1 seems to be struggling with attracting new engine suppliers. If I remember correctly, Honda is the only new engine supplier since a lot of manufacturers left the sport around 10 years ago, and Honda was one of those who left then.

Just seen this (because I went looking for when the GP times were going to be this weekend, only to find there isn't one... must be next weekend).

That puts Red Bull and the juniors right in the clarts. Renault more than likely won't take them back, and the Ferrari engine currently has as much power as a broken vacuum cleaner.

It's all pointing in the direction of Mercedes doing a continual hatchet-job on the competition until they get bored of winning and take their engines with them, after which F1 will resemble the British Touring Car Championship in 2000 - three or four works teams running three cars each and a load of hastily-assembled insta-rejects (which will be ripe for profiling, if F1/GP Rejects Mark III ever rises from what I am already concerned is the ashes of the 2015 version).

Just realised that this is in totally the wrong part of the forum but never mind. This is only the temporary forum after all! But yeah, what will Red Bull do for engines? Come back Al Melling all is forgiven! Don Pentecost, can you provide them with an engine with your revolutionary power source? It'll be a good bit of publicity...

    Could the Mugen loophole work?

But those Mugen engines of the early 2000s never were old stock, were they? If there was to be some off-brand version of the 2021 Honda engine in 2022 or beyond, it'd be the equivalent of what the 1998-99 Mecachrome / Playlife / Supertec engines were to Renault, or Asiatech to Peugeot - likely as not, a complete dud. And Honda have already had that experience from 2015-17.

This has got to be a dire warning to everyone bar Ferrari - never bet on the manufacturers sticking around unless they're winning as easily as Merc are now, because as soon as the wind changes they're on their bike. Honda have done it four times now, and three of those times they didn't have to set a car on fire to give themselves an excuse.

Hmm I'm not the only one with this thought...

You were right about the Mugens not really being old stock. Although their V10 was introduced as 'Honda' with Tyrrell in 1991, it was a separate development.

Weren't Red Bull talking about making their own engine at some stage in the not-too-distant past? Time to put the corporation's vast wealth where Marko's mouth is.
